Meet the Moth: White Witch Moth

The White Witch Moth (Thysania agrippina) is one of the world's largest insects, with a wingspan that can reach up to 12in.

Legend has it that early naturalists who collected birds and bats by shooting them were unable to hit the target of the moth’s small body, therefore thinking of it as an "unkillable witch."

Found from Uruguay to Mexico, and even as far north as Texas, this impressive insect also goes by common names ghost mothgreat grey witch and great owlet moth. Many South American cultures believed these moths are a messenger to the underworld, carrying the souls of the dead on their large wings.

The White Witch Moth is a featured in our limited “Witching Hour,” collection, and a miniature version is included in the "Halloween Minis" set. It’s a beautiful and wonderfully spooky addition to our specimens!
